Joaquim Rodriguez was victorious in today’s stage, stage 12 of the Vuelta a Espana. Rodriguez pulled off his second stage win in the Vuelta to consolidate his lead at the head of the race. He now has a 13 second lead on the GC. Alberto Contador still holds on to second spot in the GC, after failing to capitalise on today’s good workIt all came down to the final 150m sprint, and Rodriguez was just to strong. Rodriguez was really powerful in the final uphill sprint and did enough to keep Contador at bay, winning the stage by an 8 second margin.
Team Sky rider Chris Froome found the going tough today on the category 3 climb, a fifth place finish today for Froome keeps his third place spot safe but he now trails the lead by 51 seconds. Contador was disappointed with the second place today as the win would have seen him claim the red jersey. Tomorrow’s stage consists of 173 km of undulating hills, starting at Santiago De Compostela and finishing up at Ferrol.
This is perhaps one last opportuniaty for the sptiners before they hit the tough mountain stages on Saturday, Sunday and Monday.
So still very close in the top four places but Joaquin Rodriguez still has the edge at the minute.
