Triathlon
Triathlon is one of the fastest growing participation sports in the UK today. It combines physical and mental elements and, like cycling, demands athleticism, stamina and determination – moreover, it’s great FUN! Triathlon has an extensive history – the first Ironman, held on Hawaii’s big island, was to settle a pub argument between swimmers, runners and cyclists as to who was fittest!
Triathlon is split down into the three disciplines: swimming, cycling and running. Races are held over a number of distances from very short (Super Sprint) to ultra-long distance events such as Ironman and Ironman 70.3. Typical distances are as follows:
- Sprint: 750m swim, 20km bike, 5km run
- Olympic: 1500m swim, 40km bike, 10km run
- Ironman 70.3: 1.2 mile swim, 56mile bike, 13.1mile run
- Ironman: 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike, 26.2mile run
The great thing about triathlon is that everyone has their strengths and preferred sports and this makes racing great fun and a great all-round test of fitness!
